Only a de facto monopoly on NMR spectrometers could allow Bruker to release something this janky, obtuse and user-unfriendly in 2020, but unfortunately that's what they have had - and probably will have for the foreseeable future. This is why TopSpin seems to occasionally have trouble comprehending file directories, why it constantly runs into Java errors, and why it seems so much less responsive and efficient than competing programs. Let that sink in - about 78% of the computers in the world run Windows (according to a cursory Google search) and in the 25 years that TopSpin has been around they never wrote a vesion that runs on what is by far the most common operating system in the world. The Mac version doesn't have this issue, becuase OS X is also a Unix OS and TopSpin can therefore run somewhat natively.

Powered by Parallel Accumulation Serial Fragmentation (PASEF), Bruker’s timsTOF instruments offer next generation speed and sensitivity to identify and quantify challenging compounds. Modern Windows versions of TopSpin were never actually ported to Windows - instead, Windows runs a virtual machine running some stripped-down Unix OS in which the actual TopSpin program runs. Trapped ion mobility spectrometry (TIMS) provides an additional dimension of separation, accelerating diverse research applications from 4D-Omics to MALDI Imaging. This is, incidentally, the reason Bruker spectrometers save NMR data in folder structures that seem alien to a Windows user and most of the files lack file extensions - because this wasn't as standard in the original OS.

TopSpin was originally developed to run on that Unix OS, which was some obscure "Linux-but-not-really" affair. Our NMR manager told me that one of the reasons TopSpin is so clunky and obtuse is that, back in the mid-1990s, Bruker would send you a computer with some random Unix operating system when you bought a spectrometer.
